Luther Gareth “Sonny” Cocanougher, 84, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2019. He was born on November 26, 1934 in Gravel Switch, Kentucky to the late George Luther and Corneila Edwards Cocanougher and was the husband of Delana Hughes Cocanougher for 59 years.
Mr. Cocanougher was a member of Beech Grove Baptist Church and served his country in the United States Army. He was a retired Bridge Builder for RR Dawson Bridge Company and a graduate of the former Perryville High School. He loved watching UK Basketball and he and Delana went to Florida every winter where he liked to take long strolls on the beach. He also was fond of camping and bicycling.
In addition to his loving wife, Delana, survivors include a son, Joseph Michael (Annette) Cocanougher, two grandchildren, Will Cocanougher, Lindley (James) Zanolli, four great-grandchildren, Tierney, Demetrius, Oktober, Madalynn Zanolli, and a brother, William “Billy” Cocanougher. In addition to his parents, Sonny was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Alford and a brother, David Edwards Cocanougher.
The funeral service will be 12:00 p.m. (noon) Thursday, May 16, 2019 at Walden Funeral Home Perryville with Jason Kilby officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Camp Nelson National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, May 16, 2019. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 15, 2019 from 5-8:00 p.m. and after 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Walden Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Will Cocanougher, Roger Alford, Brad Simmons, Gary Jarboe, Paul O’Bryan and Tony O’Bryan.
Honorary bearers will be Lindley, Tierney, Demetrius, Madalynn and Oktober Zanolli.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association.
